AJA'S AMZING RACE Aja Shanahan, our all round PR wonder woman at Avviso, did us proud with her recent mammoth effort competing in the Coast To Coast multi-sport race in New Zealand. The race is the world’s premier multi-sport event and traverses the South Island of New Zealand from the Tasman Sea to the Pacific Ocean, covering more than 240 kilometres in 2 days.
Aja’s team of two achieved an amazing sixth placing overall in the women’s team competition, with her leg of the race including a 67km kayak through white water rapids in the huge Wimakariri Gorge. Congratulations Aja on your fantastic achievement!
ANIMAL TRACKS @ THE ZOO PROGRAM LAUNCH Some of Taronga Zoo's favourite little animals made the VIP guest list at Avviso's breakfast announcement of the Big G Conducts children's show Animal Tracks @ The Zoo. Ring-tailed possums, joeys and a snake joined assembled guests there to learn about conductor George Ellis's new project, which involves travelling the country introducing orchestral music to children. Ellis has been the maestro of the Sydney Opera House Babies Proms for the past six years, and his show at the Zoo raised money for the Great Southern Oceans Appeal. Ellis said he started the interactive program because children rarely had an opportunity to experience a symphony orchestra performing live. "This show makes it accessible," he says. AUSTRALIAN STEELERS TAKE-OUT THE OCEANIA WHEELCHAIR RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIPS TO SECURE THEIR PLACE AT BEIJING Avviso was involved in all of the thrills and spills of the Arrive alive Oceania Wheelchair Rugby Championships in November 2007, which saw the Australian Steelers team easily secure its place at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, after clashes with some of the world’s top teams. The tournament involved wheelchair rugby teams from Australia, Japan, Korea, South Africa, China, Canada and reigning Paralympic champions New Zealand, all competing for their chance to represent their country at the Beijing Paralympics. The championships were sponsored by the NSW Motor Accidents Authority's youth road safety banner - Arrive alive and the NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care Don’t DIS my ABILITY campaign, which celebrated the International Day of People with a Disability on 3 December, 2007.
